How it works

Editing is often called “the invisible art.” If you haven’t worked with an editor before, the process may seem mysterious! But the truth is that there’s no mystery: editing is believing your words matter and then attending–at levels big and small–to the details that help the words land with your audience.

Each client is different, but below is a general breakdown of how the editing process typically works.

The Logistics

Pricing

Pricing is dependent on a number of factors. Once we’ve agreed on an hourly rate and project scope, I track my working time with the Toggl app. This secure system keeps detailed logs, which I’m happy to share with clients.

Communication

I mostly communicate with clients over email or Zoom, but I prefer in-person meetings when it’s possible. Some projects require lots of back-and-forth communication; others require very little. Both are normal!

Platform

Some clients prefer that I edit their text myself, when possible. Others prefer that I stick to the margins, making suggestions. Some like a mix of both. I’m up for whatever best serves your writing process. If you’re not sure, I’ll talk you through the pros and cons of both options.

Invoicing

Invoices go out via email on the final Friday of the month. Retainers can pay monthly or yearly, depending on your preference. If you’re using grant or department funds and need the invoice in a certain format, just let me know up front! Accepted payment types are in the FAQs.

The Process

Zap me an email.

In your initial email, include your project details: goal, audience, scope, and timeline. If you know what type of editing you need, mention that too. (Not sure? Check out the FAQs.) Please attach or link a sample of your project, so I can get a feel for your writing.

Hammer out the details.

For simple proofreading projects, I’ll respond with questions, offer a time estimate, and get to work. For developmental editing projects, we’ll set up a meeting to talk details: goals, timelines, budget, editing platform, editing logistics, citation styles, etc.

Watch the process unfold.

I’ll dive into your work and be in touch as questions come up. The length of this phase depends on where you are in the writing process. But whether I’m helping you develop ideas or close reading for clarity, I guarantee your writing will return to you stronger than you left it.

Send your words into the world.

Whether you’re writing for journal readers, conference attendees, award committees, or the general public, your words have a job to do. You can send your writing into the world knowing every single word has been attended to, with your specific audience in mind.
