How it works

Editing is often called “the invisible art,” so the process may seem a bit mysterious! Each client is different, but below is a general breakdown of how the editing process typically works.

The Basics

Pricing

Once we’ve decided on the project scope, I track my reading and editing time with the Toggl app. This secure system keeps detailed logs of the process, which I’m happy to share with clients.

Communication

I mostly communicate with clients over email or Zoom, but I prefer in-person meetings when it’s possible. Some projects require lots of back-and-forth communication, others require very little. Both are normal!

Document Logistics

Some clients prefer that I edit their text myself, when possible. Others prefer that I stick to the margins, making suggestions. Some like a mix of both. I’m up for whatever best serves your own writing process.

Invoicing

Invoices go out via email on the final Friday of the month. If you’re using grant or department funds and need the invoice in a certain format, just let me know up front! Accepted payment types are in the FAQs.

New Clients

Send an email.

Send me an email with your project details: goal, audience, scope, and timeline. If you know what type of editing you need, mention that too. (Not sure? Check out the FAQs.) Please attach or link a sample of your project, so I can get a feel for your writing.

Hammer out the details.

For simple proofreading projects, I’ll respond with questions, offer a time estimate, and get to work. If it’s a more in-depth project, we’ll set up a meeting to talk details: goals, timelines, budget, editing platform, editing logistics, citation styles, etc.

Watch the magic happen.

I’ll dive into your work and be in touch as questions come up. The length of this phase depends on where you are in the writing process. But whether I’m helping you develop ideas or close reading for clarity, your writing will return to you stronger than you left it.

Settle up.

I send invoices at the end of each month for both one-time and on-going projects. Retainers can pay monthly or yearly, depending on their preference. If you’d like a breakdown of time-tracking stats, just let me know! I’m happy to share that data.

If you need a straight proofreading job, I’ll reply to your email with questions, then offer a time estimate and get to work. For more in-depth projects, we’ll meet to talk details.
